Chéri Samba is a Congolese painter born in 1956 in Kinto M’Vuila (RDC), recognized as one of the pioneers of African contemporary art.
Self-taught, he starts as a science painter in Kinshasa before developing a singular style mixing text and image, in a painting that is both figurative, colorful and deeply narrative.
_ His work, at the intersection of diary and social commentary, addresses with irony and lucidity African realities, politics, religion, corruption, power, but also the universal human condition.
Darling Samba often portrays himself in his paintings as a critical observer of society.
_ His paintings, vibrant and full of energy, combine folk language, humor and philosophy, giving birth to a unique aesthetic: that of Congolese folk painting. Exhibited in the world’s largest museums, from the Centre Pompidou to the MoMA to the Tate Modern, it has marked the history of African art since its participation in the exhibition
The Magicians of Earth in 1989.
Through his work, Chéri Samba proclaims:
“I paint the life of my country, the lives of people, mine too. My work is my life. »
* Symbol of a lucid, inventive and free Africa, it remains an essential figure in the dialogue between popular art and contemporary art of the world.
